November 8th 2024, more tripe about Toyota going to produce magic batteries
It's a slow news week, so I wouldn't bother with this usually, but it's an exercise in critical thinking and compare and contrast with the other announcements. I won't insult anyone's intelligence by explaining.

October 24th 2024, CATL develops a long range PHEV battery utilising sodium ion technology
This seems to be as I suggested would happen years ago a hybrid battery where a sodium layer buffers a lithium battery for operation in -40c conditions. It is intended for use in range extending PHEVs where an ICE tops up the battery and is not part of the drivetrain. Personally I think that sounds extremely problematic, liquid fuel has a shelf life and with 400km range outside of an abnormal use case it would create problems.

October 24th 2024, China's GNE develops lithium sulfur batteries with 700wh/kg energy density
The claim is that life cycle issues have been “mitigated”. Forget cars! That sort of energy density would change the face of aviation and trucking. Plus Lithium Sulfur has a theoretical limit of 2,600wh/kg.
https://www.ess-news.com/2024/10/23/chinas-gne-develops-lithium-sulfur-battery-with-energy-density-of-700wh-kg/
October 24th 2024, Quantumscape begins production of 300wh/kg solid-state batteries
Small scale production being sampled to automakers. Its cells are the first anode-free solid-state lithium-metal cells ever produced. The charge time is under 15 minutes. Once again this would turn 210 mile range EVs with LFP batteries into having a 350 mile range. Remarkably this is the fourth similar reputable announcement this week.

October 23rd 2024, Harvard seek to take fast charging solid-state battery to production
Claimed to have a 6000 cycle life, which equates to over 2 million miles and 10 minute charging. As ever lab to production line is the rocky road.

October 18th 2024, Chery to launch solid-state battery in 2026 and launches fast charging LFP batteries now
The solid-state claim is an aim of 600wh/kg in 2025 which would casually give EVs more range than most ICE cars with a much lighter battery than in current EVs.
The LFP claim is 400 km of range on a 5 minute charge, but the batteries seem far less energy dense than what CATL and BYD are offering. Cycle life is 3000 e.g. good for easily 600,000 miles.
https://carnewschina.com/2024/10/18/chery-to-launch-solid-state-battery-in-2026-and-launches-ultra-fast-charging-6c-batteries-now/
October 14th, 2024 Hyundai aim for 300wh/kg LFP batteries in 2025
This invites a number of responses!
Is it pure hyperbole? Some of the article gives that impression, but a claim of 2025 lends credibility.
300wh/kg takes a typical 210 mile range LFP EV from 2024 and makes it a 350 miles range EV with a smaller/lighter/cheaper battery.
Plus of course LFP has advantages over Lithium Ion, there are no controversial Nickel or Cobalt and you can charge to 100% as a matter of course. Never mind the fact they are cheaper and far less prone to thermal runaway and have much greater cycle life.
https://electrek.co/2024/10/14/hyundai-develop-industry-leading-300wh-kg-lfp-ev-batteries/
October 12th, 2024 quick and easy Sodium battery anodes
Perhaps not very exciting, but a good example of the innovations that constantly drive the costs of battery production down. Good news for sodium batteries is good news for Lithium prices and hence good news for EVs.
https://techxplore.com/news/2024-10-quick-easy-anode-materials-sodium.html
October 10th 2024 more fast charging news from an unlikely source!
Fast charging claims come thick and fast. This one is still in the lab, but hey it's a slow news week and it's an interesting read.

September 29th 2024, Hyundai promises cheaper LFP battery production
The article alludes to the much touted $100 per kwh figure that was meant to mark production price parity with ICE cars, and puts the 2023 cost at $139. But both BYD and CATL have talked about prices halving in 2024 which would put current costs at $70.
The Hyundai process which eliminates a production step is a promise of another cost reduction.

September 26th 2024, General Motors to produce CATLs 6c charging battery in China
This is a life line for general motors whose sales have collapsed in China. News on this battery that can fully charge in 10 minutes has been around since June, but now we hear it will be in cars in 2025.
https://carnewschina.com/2024/09/26/general-motors-to-produce-ultra-fast-6c-charging-ev-in-china/
September 25th 2024, cheap iron chloride cathodes
The revolutionary material, iron chloride (FeCl3), costs a mere 1-2% of typical cathode materials and can store the same amount of electricity.
The cost of their whole battery system is 30-40% of current LIBs as no Nickel or Cobalt is used.
The technology is pitched as being less than 5 years from commercialisation.

September 22nd, 2024, startup Tyfast claim very fast charging 20,000 life cycle vanadium anode batteries
The aim is for 3 minute charging in batteries 30% more expensive than Lithium ion but lesser energy density. The target is “always on” devices like warehouse robots.
It is interesting how different use cases may be best served by different batteries chemistries.
https://spectrum.ieee.org/vanadium-batteries
September 22nd 2024, imec claim high energy density lithium metal batteries compatible with existing manufacturing processes
The detail though suggests 3 times the cost of where I suspect LFP batteries are getting to right now and a 100 cycle life. That translates to 30,000 miles before a BEV battery hits serious degradation.
https://www.imec-int.com/en/press/lithium-metal-battery-novel-solid-electrolyte-achieves-1070-whl-through-cost-effective
September 22nd 2024, BMW teaming up with Redwood on battery recycling
Batteries are fill of valuable materials the recycling industry will grow. Possibly the story here is that the recycling industry can influence manufacturing to gear to recycling. One elephant in the room is Tesla 4680 battery packs that are fill of “goo” making them practically impossible to repair and more difficult to recycle.
https://cleantechnica.com/2024/09/20/bmw-to-get-battery-recycling-support-from-jb-straubels-redwood-materials/
September 21st 2024, Lithium Vanadium batteries claimed to be better than LFP
Boston startup Pure Lithium is replacing Nickel and Cobalt in cathodes with vanadium which is relatively abundant.
https://www.mining.com/vanadium-is-the-new-battery-cathode-chemistry-says-pure-lithium-ceo/
September 15th 2024, Catl launch 1.5 million km bus batteries
These batteries have a 10 year 1 million km warranty and are projected for a “service life” of 15 years which I feel might be misinterpreted as some kind of time limit on battery life where really it's a projection for a battery clocking up more than 1 million km.
https://cnevpost.com/2024/09/14/catl-launches-battery-electric-buses/
September 14th 2024, fly wheel storage goes live in China
No one has crunched the numbers here, but especially as it is the first of its kind I suspect it would have been expensive.
This though symbolises the problem of competing with fossil fuels in a market economy. Fossil fuel may be cheap at point of use, but the hidden costs are incomprehensibly high, the literally destruction of the eco system.
But despite this we demand renewables to be cheaper than fossil fuels.

September 11th 2024, Panasonic to begin mass production of 4680 battery cells
It's important to remember that 4860 is just a specification like saying an AA battery. The real questions will be how much? And how good? In comparison with what Tesla is able to do with its thus far problematic 4860 production.
September 9th 2024, Envsision produces the highest energy density grid storage battery
Grid storage batteries continue their journey towards commoditization. A lot of people think that Tesla will continue to make massive profits from grid storage, but I fail to see how long term.

September 7th 2024, Wartsila releases new grid storage battery.
This is in the list almost because it isn't very interesting and that serves to highlight the growing commoditization of grid level batteries.

________
September 6th 2024, Group 1 unveils potassium ion battery
I have found little technical material on this, but they say it is being sampled to cell manufacturers. Batteries free of lithium, nickel, copper and cobalt are clearly a good thing. The release places energy density at between 160 and 180wh/kg on a par with older LFP batteries.
______
September 5th 2024, Nio signs worldwide battery swap partnership deal
The fact that companies continue to pursue battery swapping as a solution is interesting. But like we have petrol and diesel coexisting there is no intrinsic reason why battery swapping shouldn't have a place. A swappable battery can still be charged without swapping and swapping has a number of potential advantages.
You don't own what is the expensive point of failure in an EV.
You should be able to choose battery size, only swapping to a heavier battery when needed.
If you can't charge at home it's the familiar solution to ICE drivers.
It would be a bit faster than even very fast charging EVs.
The merits of these points are very debatable, but hey people will pay £500 to go to an Oasis gig!

_________
September 4th 2024, MG to release car with possibly a 368wh/kg “solid-state” battery in 2025.
The article implies it will be a battery jointly developed in a partnership between SAIC and Chinese battery specialist, Jiangsu Qingtao and actually semi solid-state. SAIC has claimed their batteries will be 30% cheaper than LFP in the long term.
Like many announcements in recent weeks these energy densities would create long range EVs lighter than ICE cars.

August 31st 2024, Study shows that how a battery is initially charged can have a dramatic effect on battery life.

_______
August 31st 2024, Swansea University collaborates in the development of a graphene foil

_______
August 30th 2024 , ORNL with a claim of a thin electrode separator membrane that could give solid-state batteries 500 wh/kg density.
Of course there are many solid-state claims at the moment and this one is still in the lab.
_______
August 30th 2024, Chinese company Penghui Energy promise solid-state mass production of a “cheap” possibly 300 wh/kg battery in 2026.
The 600 cycle life gives cars an approximately 300,000 mile life. The price claim is that “it costs just 15% more than your average standard battery cell used in today's EVs” but that's such a moving goal post that it could be twice as expensive or more than some new LFP batteries.
__________
August 28th 2024, Yokohama National University achieving high energy density with manganese anodes
Note the density of 820wh/kg quoted isn't a cell level density let alone pack level. But we are talking game changing numbers in a no Cobalt battery. A reminder here that I aim to keep these battery updates in the realms of real rather than hyperbole, from lab to production is a long road. This particular claim is sufficiently interesting to get a mention but might drop off the list unless it firms up.

______
August 15th 2024, China based Eve Energy reveals a very fast charging NCM battery pack targeting 400wh/kg by 2028.
I still find myself struggling with why car users would care? It's not gain if you spend 5 minutes at a charger rather than 3 minutes at the pump and then have to park up for the toilets. Plus whilst the harm in fast charging is it appears greatly exaggerated I have never heard anyone claim It's totally harmless.
_______

August 9th 2024, An expansion of sodium ion batteries on the Chinese grid.
_______
August 7th 2024, Forge battery claiming sampling on a 300wh/kg at cell level battery with 10 minute charging and reduced manufacturing costs
Factory plans are for mass production in 2026.
It's interesting to compare this announcement which is perhaps 20% improvement or less on current available best is class batteries with more hyperbolic "game changing" claims.
In my view it doesn't take very much to change the game. If these batteries could replace LFP batteries in cars with 225 miles range, those cars would have over 300 miles range and that's a tipping point without solid-state being needed.
_________
August 6th 2024, Batteries have dropped in price 90% in 15 years

________
July 16th 2024, This story not only talks about a high mileage battery getting a warranty replacement but about growing calls for battery warranties to increase to 15 years at 85% capacity.
This would eliminate the last concerns about battery life. Notably the car was a later Model S with a more reliable battery pack than earlier cars. It can't be emphasized enough how young the modern history of EV batteries is. From nothing 20 years ago to where we are today. The development curve for making a really real world reliable for decades battery hasn't even spanned that time period.

June 17th 2024, Production of the WeLion 260 wh/kg at pack level, semi solid-state battery continues to increase.
These are 150kwh batteries but at a $40,000 cost. I have no information on how that cost might reduce, but I'd invite people to consider that a 50kwh battery of this type would give a car a decent range and it is not at all unreasonable to assume volume production would halve costs.
https://cnevpost.com/2024/06/17/welion-sees-31-pct-increase-installations-may-2024/
Cycle life appears to be 20% degradation over 1000 cycles. That's not over impressive but 1000 x 50 x 5 e.g. a 50kwh battery getting 5 miles a kw would reach 250,000 miles which isn't terrible.
